Year 13 Digital Technology

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs H. James.

What is Digital Technology? Technology is the application of knowledge for practical purposes to help solve an issue. It is a creative subject where we work out solutions to problems. Since we are 'digital technology' we will be learning to use computers and their applications to create these solutions for clients and stakeholders.

What is this course about?

  • Term one to three - After a brief refresher of digital technology skills students will be starting their main project for a community client in their chosen strand of either digital media or coding. This includes completing an inquiry and proposal, designing and developing their outcome and then creating it.
  • Term three - While finishing off their community project students will be able to choose to enter the external assessment - AS91908 - Analyse an area of computer science or complete a unit standard of their choosing.
  • NCEA Technology Scholarship - Students are able to chose to enter a report for Technology Scholarship. This will be based off their main project which is completed during the year. Due to the requirements of scholarship, students will need to make this decision early in the year to ensure they can meet the standard.

All of the above learning will give students a good foundation of digital technology skills which they can take into the workplace or tertiary study.

There is an element of flexibility available to students to choose which standards they complete to gain their credits. Due to this, students need to be able to work independently and take initiative for their learning as many different projects and learning will be occurring in the class at once.

Recommended Prior Learning

It is prefered that students have completed Year 12 Digital Technology, however they can still experience success if they have not.

They need to be committed to learning the work they are less familiar with and be able to work independently on their project.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

It is useful for students to have their own wired headphones to be able to use in class.
