Year 11 Classics and History

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms T. Robertson, Ms L. Bruce-Miller.

The History and Classics programme is planned to help ākonga gain a deeper understanding of historical events and concepts through comparing and contrasting. Exploring how power has been used through centuries to control groups of people and their responses, specifically in the Spartacus Slave Revolt and Waikato Land Wars.

Ākonga will develop their research skills and learn how to process information from different sources, how they reveal different perspectives, there reliability and ability to understand information they may have never seen before. They will understand how power relationships often drive history and how this history is shaped and remembered differently based on where people are born and raised.

Ākonga will create a research project on events that are important or interesting to them and explore the big ideas of history through their own interests. It will develop their understanding and give them the time to develop their skills.


Topics could include:


  • Waikato Land War
  • Homosexual Law Reform
  • Judaea Revolt in Rome
  • Spartacus Slave Rebellion

Course Overview

Term 1
Spartacus Slave Revolt and Judae Revolt

In this term we focus on how to use primary sources to understand an event and how to tell a historical story in order.
We also focus on power relationships with gladiators, whom were slaves, and the harsh treatment they faced from their owners.

Term 2
Waikato Land War and Homosexual Law Reform

In term two we focus on the significance and different perspectives of events.
We look at how significance is determined by impact and collective maumaharatanga, and look at how people's perspectives influence actions and speeches.

Term 3
In term 3 students have the opportunity for an inquiry project of either a classical or historical context. Ākonga will use their skills from the year to research and present a project that interests them the most.

Additionally, we will focus on our external for the year which will be interpreting sources and concepts of mana, cause, and effect.
