Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs S. Matheson.

This English course is aimed at supporting students who work hard but find English challenging. The Literacy course will enable students to develop a comprehensive range of reading and writing skills and support them in working towards the Literacy co-requisite qualification. Students will also have the opportunity to complete two internal Level 1 Achievement Standards worth five credits each. There will be no external examination for this course.

Please note: 

Based on achievement in Year 9 and 10, individual teachers will make recommendations to the HOLA of English as to which English course is best suited for a student.

This course leads to: Successful completion of this course may lead to 12English2 at the discretion of the Head of Learning Area.


Course Overview

Term 1
In Term 1, students will complete reading and writing rich study on the New Zealander, Johnny Pohe. The focus of all course work will be on growing confidence and moving toward achievement in the literacy co-requisites.

Term 2
In Term 2, students have the first opportunity to sit the literacy co-requisites. They also complete a reading and writing rich study on the New Zealander, Burt Munro. There is an opportunity to complete a Level 1 Writing Achievement Standard.

Term 3
In Term 3, students have the opportunity to resit the literacy co-requisites. They complete a Language in Context unit on War and Propaganda and are given the opportunity to complete a Level 1 Achievement Standard connected to this topic.
