Numbers are restricted.  The HoD must confirm course suitability. Students cannot take this course alongside 12 PED or 12SPL. 


Course Description: Outdoor Education is for students who want to push their boundaries and learn to get the most out of life.  No prior experience is needed, although a reasonable level of fitness and a positive attitude are definitely required. A wide variety of outdoor pursuits are introduced, including: kayaking, water safety, navigation, orienteering, bushcraft, rock climbing, abseiling, and caving.

Destinations include: Abel Tasman National Park, Kahurangi National Park, Nelson Lakes National Park, and Mount Arthur.  Academic work is an essential part of the course and leadership, weather, risk management and environmental issues are studied as well as the theory behind the practical activities we do.  All field work is carried out in timetabled Outdoor Education classes, and time out of other subjects is kept to a minimum.  

Assessment:  Up to 19 credits available at Level 2.  A mix of Achievement Standards and Unit Standards

Prerequisites: Numbers are restricted.  The HoD must confirm course suitability. 

This course leads to: Year 13 Outdoor Education.

Contribution:  The overnight camp contribution for year 12 Outdoor Education is $300. This covers the cost of transport and accommodation for practical camps and overnight field trips. Occasionally, there may be optional activities that will incur additional costs. To run the program as planned, we rely on these contributions in addition to government funding. Please be aware of this when selecting this course. If cost is a deterrent, please speak to your Dean.
