13ENG1 Course DescriptionTeacher in Charge: Mrs S. Matheson.
Recommended Prior Learning12 or more credits gained in English Achievement Standards at Level 2 including the Level 2 Writing Standard or at the discretion of HOLA of English.
Course Description: 13ENG1 is an advanced course that allows students to develop an in-depth and critical understanding of English literature and language. Students will have the opportunity to explore major works of literature, research thematic ideas and create a portfolio of writing. This is primarily an academic course and contains both internal and external assessments.
There are also opportunities to sit English Scholarship exams.
Assessment: Achievement Standards up to 25 credits. This includes up to two externally assessed standards
Prerequisites: 12 or more credits gained in English Achievement Standards at Level 2 including the Level 2 Writing Standard or at the discretion of HOLA of English.
Course Overview
Term 1
In Term 1, students will typically be introduces to an overarching theme for the year. The first Writing Portfolio tasks are completed and, depending on the course structure, the Create Visual Text standard will be completed.
Term 2
The focus for Term 2 is the Studied Written Text Achievement Standard which is finally assessed in an external examination. Critical Texts or Connections essays will be written.
Term 3
In Term 3, work continues on the writing portfolio. The focus is then on preparing for the Unfamiliar Texts and Studied Written texts derived grade and external examinations.
